    Subject: You insult The South

    [Sent to Bill O’Reilly of Fox News]

    “Abraham Lincoln was the gold standard of leadership for this country. His personal sacrifice dealing with the worst crisis America has ever faced is what we need today: politicians not looking out for themselves, not wedded to an ideology, but willing to do difficult things for the good of all Americans.”

    These words of yours endorsing Lincoln’s leadership give me great pause, causing me to consider to what degree you regard Southerners as human beings.

    * Lincoln routinely imprisoned northern American citizens who allowed their questioning of the war effort to be made public, estimates are as many as 38,000;
    * Lincoln suspended habeas corpus in at least one occasion in violation of an individual’s constitutional rights;
    * Lincoln endorsed and apparently explicitly ordered the scorched-earth policies utilized by Generals Grant, Sherman, and especially General Sheridan’s burning of the Shenandoah Valley in order to leave Southern civilians destitute;
    * Lincoln conducted an illegal, unconstitutional, and UNDECLARED WAR against states, even after avowing they had never left the union, an act which the constitution itself states is the responsibility of the federal government to prevent.

    I could go on. In valuing Lincoln’s leadership so highly it is obvious that the unconstitutional measures Lincoln utilized are thereby endorsed by you, and thus Lincoln’s preference to hold himself above the law, as a totalitarian, a despot.

    You, sir, are no friend to the South, especially those tens of thousands of Southerners who know their ancestors, and that their ancestors became victims of an illegal war conducted by Lincoln in a most uncivilized manner, something General Sherman himself admitted that he had conducted the war against the civilized principles prohibiting pillaging, a capital offense, at West Point.

    I had been a fan of yours for quite some time, since approximately the year 2002. But your endorsement of Lincoln, especially his “leadership” ability is an insult to all Southerners, both Confederate and Pro-Union, for pillaging Unionist regiments made no distinction.

    At best, your endorsement is lazy history. At the worst, your words are the words of a sycophant who willfully disparages the legacy of Lincoln’s brutality toward the citizens of the South. Endorsements such as yours, as well as the echo provided by Juan Williams on your program, serve to pull the scab off the 150 year old wound inflicted by the war. I had not been a Southern Partisan, but after reading your insulting endorsement of Lincoln, I am fast becoming one.
