Fulwar Skipwith was a most reluctant president of the Republic of West Florida. The Spanish government was generous to land owners like Skipwith but attenuated by Napoleon’s Peninsular Campaign; France wanted to re-take Louisiana, Britain wanted to reclaim her possession east of the Mississippi, but only the United States was in a position to annex West Florida then pay for East Florida. What began as an excellent relationship between Catholic Spain and the fledgling United States deteriorated to a bitter emnity which culminated in the Spanish-American War toward the end of that century and the aid rendered to the Founding Fathers by the Governor of Spanish Louisiana, Don Bernardo de Galvez, all but forgotten. One can observe the Bicentennial of the Republic of West Florida by driving along Interstate 12 from Baton Rouge to Slidell, which has been renamed the Republic of West Florida Highway to commemorate this event.
